The Lakshadweep archipelago comprises nine inhabited islands: Androth, Amini, Kadmat, Kiltan, Chetlat, Kavaratti, Bitra, Minicoy, and Kalpeni. Designated as a Union Territory by the Government of India, it is administered by appointed administrators. Previously under the rule of Kolathiri Rajas and Arakkal Beevi, the British administration introduced modern judicial systems in 1816. Initially, a Monegar served as a Village Magistrate with limited jurisdiction, later elevated to a Second Class Sub-Magistrate in 1872 and a Third Class Magistrate in 1909.
By 1948, they attained the status of Second Class Magistrate. Local Amins and Kariyakkars constituted civil and magistrate courts. In 1965, the Laccadiv Minicoy and Amini Dweep Islands Civil Court Regulation was enacted, establishing regular judicial officers. Subsequently, courts were established in Kavaratti, Amini, and Androth.
Proposed expansions include courts in Kadmat and Minicoy. Legal frameworks were applied from 1 November 1967. The High Court of Kerala serves Lakshadweep, appointing presiding officers from the Kerala Judicial Service on deputation.
